MPox is a rare disease that is caused by infection with the Monkeypox virus.

The epidemiology of this disease is evolving and it is important that the most up to date guidance on Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) measures such as isolation and PPE are followed. Local guidance is available on the Intranet or by contacting the IPC team.

It is essential that a through travel history is obtained from the patient as well as possible exposure risks, this will help determine whether the patient meets the definition of a possible or probable case (the case definition is set by UKHSA). Current UKHSA guidance relating to MPox can be found here.

Please discuss ALL suspected cases of MPox with Consultant Microbiologist who can advise on testing.

Once a patient has been designated as a possible or probable case and testing has been agreed, please collect the following samples using appropriate PPE.

MPOX sampling

Two Green Virocult swabs in viral transport medium– one for MPox testing, one for other viral infections which could mimic MPox (eg VZV, HSV, Enterovirus, Syphilis). Swabs should be collected from lesions or if no lesions present a throat swab can be taken.

Gold top serum with blood sample for storage / differential diagnostic testing

Purple EDTA tube with blood sample for storage which may need to be sent if MPox is detected by viral PCR on the swab. It also allows for other viral aetiologies to be tested if needed.
